There is so much left to explore!
Part adventure, part science, this experience mixes water science with technology as participants play with modern and old fashion tools used to understand the watery world around us. Students will run science experiments, collect water samples, and use a microscope to compare the ecology of Lake Michigan and the St Joseph River. While onboard the ship, students will learn about famous science expeditions that took place on ships, and handle the old technology used for navigation, depth sounding and bottom sampling. As always, hands on hoisting of the sails and manning the ship is a given for an authentic experience on Tallship MJ, rigged like the exploring ships of old. Dr. Alison Bray, a professor in Chemistry and Marine Science will be leading our participants in this great summer camp style adventure!
The Expedition Sail is geared towards kids ages 11 -14 (6th - 8th grade). We do require that you match this criteria to buy a ticket. At this time, we are not allowing any tag along parents. Think of it as a summer camp adventure for your child.
A deep lover of science and the sea Professor Bray offers her expertise in developing and running the Expedition Sail. She has been exploring Lake Michigan since she was child while visiting her grandmothers home in the area. We are thrilled to have her onboard to help us learn about Lake Michigan and the St Joseph River.
