The Experience and What to expect

Location and Parking

MJ is located at the docks in the Marina at Harbor Shores, just across from Plank's Tavern. When arriving you can park in the Inn at Harbor Shores parking lot located at:

800 Whitwam Drive, St Joseph, MI 49085.

After stopping off at the hotel's restrooms and bars (see below) you can simply follow the curve of the docks until the end where you will find the ship with the two blue masts. If we are out sailing, you'll see our chairs and sign at the large sea wall. Make yourself at home.

Amenities

When you arrive, you are welcome to use the restrooms located in the lobby of the Inn at Harbor Shores. They are to the right after you walk past the reception desk. The little 'head' or toilet on board is quite authentic in size (quite narrow) and below decks; so, we highly recommend using the Inn restrooms before boarding. This is also a great opportunity to put any last-minute sunscreen on or refill your water bottle.

Food and Drink

You are welcome to bring your own food and alcohol onboard MJ. We do ask that you limit your party to one cooler. If you would like to get food and drink onsite you are welcome to place a food order with Plank's Tavern (allow at least an hour), pick up drinks at the bar, or take advantage of the easy grab and go food and alcohol at the Rise and Vine Cafe (open 7am - 7pm).

Clothes and Shoes

We suggest that you wear sensible and comfortable clothing. Weather can change quite quickly on the Lake, so a rain option and warm jacket are a good idea. We also suggest that you bring sunglasses, sunscreen, and maybe a hat. High-heels and flip flops are not recommended as the ship does move and roll.

Moving Around the Ship

As a vintage schooner, MJ has a few tricky areas when moving about the boat. It is not required to move about the ship, but if you desire to do so, please note that there are ladders, steps, and hatches, all which can be traversed with some care. We ask that you go slowly and take advantage of the many handholds. A crew member is always happy to assist. Wheelchairs and walkers are not practical while onboard. Please let us know ahead of time if you have any concerns or special considerations in this regard.

Cancellations:

 Regarding Cancellations and Refunds:

There will be no refunds unless Tall Ship MJ cancels the trip. Situations in which this would be the case include high winds and/or waves, lightning, unsafe rain, icebergs dead ahead, and the occasional guest named Gilligan...If these events were to occur, we will try to notify your party 2 hours prior to the scheduled check in time. This decision is to ensure everyone is safe, comfortable, and has ample time to make new plans or not drive far from home.
If we cancel the trip, a re-booking code will be texted to each party. If you are not able to re-book, please call the office and a refund will be issued.

We do our best to predict the weather, but occasionally mother nature changes her mind and sadly, conditions may clear up after we have cancelled. Thank you for understanding.

About Us

Welcome to Tall Ship MJ

A sail on Lake Michigan is a wonderful experience for every member of the family. St. Joseph's harbor is a working port with much to see. Home to an active U.S. Coast Guard Station, train bridge and historic lighthouse, large ships carrying freight often cross her path as MJ makes her way out to the blue lake waters. The view from the lake is the city skyline along with the beauty of wilderness areas and undeveloped beaches.

Setting Sail

Modeled after ships from the late 1800s, MJ proudly sets as much sail as comfortable and enjoys becoming one with wind and waves. She has 4 sails, three 'lowers' and one 'top'. The crew will invite you to help "hoist the main", often followed by a minute of silence to enjoy nature after sails are set. Each trip is infused with special details to help guests feel the magic of the bygone days of tall ships, their songs and stories.

Fun and Relaxed

While onboard MJ, the crew works to give you an old-fashioned experience while keeping some modern comforts. They will invite you to help with the sails, ask questions about the ship, and go on a tour below decks. As time allows, they may even entertain you with some shanties! During the trip, we encourage you to crack open your cooler, lean back, and enjoy the view of the horizon from the warm wooden decks of an old schooner.
